I saw a three point log splitter at the Tractor Supply Company on Tuesday for about $575, new. It certainly got my attention :-)

Check their website as they have many locations about the mid southern states.

You may be aware of the cycle time issue for 3ph splitters. If you aren't here it is. Heavy splitters have large hydraulic cylinders, and the hydraulic pump on many compacts pump relatively few gallons at PTO RPM. The result is that a splitter driven from a tractor pump may keep a person standing around longer than they wish. It might be a good idea to figure out the cycle time for a splitter with your tractor to see if you can live with it or not. If a dealer doesn't know, volume of the cylinders can be estimated using the formula for the volume of a cylinder and compared to the tractor pump GPM rating. I don't know if splitters, in general, use regenerative hydraulic circuits to retract the cylinders. If they do, the retraction time would be shorter, which might be a desired feature in a splitter. It’s also a good idea to make sure the tractor hydraulics operating pressure is within the range recommended for the splitter. ....

TomG that is a good point most people are not satisfied with them after they get them for perfomance reasons. The other is they need the tractor to operate and put needless hours on the tachometer that could be done with a smaller less expensive gas engine. Not knowing your situation but if you need to move more wood or use the tractor for something else. ....

Todd, I am using a 3ph splitter I bought from Northern Tool and Equipment (formally Northern Hydraulics). They sell for just under $400, part number is 1172-C151 and it works very well. I would suggest that your main pump produce about 8 - 9 GPM or better though. My believe is that the hours most people put on a compact tractor will never wear them out, they can pass them to their children and then to their grandchildren. ....
